The actual inventor of the laser is debatable, but all can agree the concept originally came from Albert Einstein, who was interested in light waves but didn't go as far as to invent it. In 1958 at Bell Labs, the first theory to produce lasers was created. A race began to invent it, with several contenders battling for the laser throne. Who won? No one knows. Honestly. In 1960, Theodore Maiman at Hughes Aircraft used a ruby as a lasing medium to create "the first laser." However, Gordon Gould (first person to even use the word laser), patented "the first laser" in 1977. Many labs, many kinds of lasers, a lot of inventors, and total chaos.

The same Red Laser Pointer that you chased your cat with as a kid comes in handy these days as a professional presentation tool.As with so many other things, I have to give an answer and a caveat. For many cats, laser pointers are wonderful for getting in a good workout. The worry most people have regarding safety is about the laser itself. The way the kid was caught is also telling. According the news story, no one actually saw him with what was definitely a laser.

Despite their size and the fact that most high power laser pointer are powered by small batteries, these devices are theoretically capable of causing eye damage as a consequence of improper operations. Users of the laser pointers must never aim the pointer at anyone. Users should disable the power source or remove the batteries when storing the pointer.

While the majority of the laser pointers contain low to moderately powered diode lasers, more powerful lasers are now being imported from China. The majority of the 100mw Laser Pointer used in the U.S. use Class 3a diode lasers in the 630-680 nm wavelength (red), with a maximum power output of between 1 and 5 mW. The length of exposure to visible lasers is usually limited by the eye's blink reflex, which normally occurs within a quarter of a second.
The hazards of laser pointers are limited to the eye. Although with most visible lasers, the largest concern is potential damage to the retina, most laser pointers are not likely to cause retinal damage. The possible exception might be the green light lasers described above.Over the past two years, as laser pointers become more ubiquitous, more and more laser pointer related incidents have been reported worldwide.
